The Volta Region: Ghana's Best-Kept Secret
While Accra and Kumasi dominate Ghana's tourism narrative, the Volta Region in the east of the country offers something different entirely: a landscape of rolling hills, misty mountains, cascading waterfalls, and serene lakeshores that feels a world away from the capital's energy. Best of all, it remains genuinely off the beaten track.
Top Attractions in the Volta Region
Wli (Agumatsa) Waterfalls
At 60 metres high, Wli is the tallest waterfall in West Africa. The lower falls are reached via a 45-minute hike through dense forest alongside a stream that grows louder as you approach. The upper falls require a 4-hour round trip but reward with total solitude and dramatic scenery. Thousands of fruit bats roost in the cliffs above โ their evening flight is spectacular.
Lake Volta
Created by the Akosombo Dam in 1965, Lake Volta is the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area. A ferry journey from Akosombo to Yeji takes you through quiet fishing communities, dense riverside forest, and open water vistas that have an almost hypnotic quality. The overnight ferry is a classic Ghanaian travel experience.
Mount Afadja (Afadjato)
Ghana's highest peak at 885 metres offers an achievable summit hike with views across the Volta Region into neighbouring Togo. The trail passes through the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary and can be combined with a visit to Wli Falls for a full day of adventure.
Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary
Sacred mona monkeys have lived alongside the community of Tafi Atome for generations. Visitors can walk through the forest and hand-feed the monkeys โ a rare, uncrowded wildlife experience that contributes directly to community income.
Best Hotels & Guesthouses in the Volta Region
Chances Resort, Ho: The Volta Region's most comfortable base, with a lovely pool and reliable restaurant. Excellent value for money.
Wli Waterfalls Inn: Basic but charming guesthouse right at the trailhead for the falls. The sound of the river outside your window is wonderful.
Lakeside Lodge, Akosombo: For Lake Volta access with sunset views across the water.
Getting to the Volta Region from Accra
Ho, the regional capital, is 160 km from Accra โ about 2.5 hours by road. STC buses run twice daily. Shared taxis are faster but less comfortable. For the Wli Falls area, continue to Hohoe (approximately 1 hour beyond Ho).
Best Time to Visit the Volta Region
The dry season (NovemberโMarch) makes hiking and ferry travel most comfortable. However, the waterfalls are most dramatic between June and October when rainfall is highest โ the trade-off is muddier trails.
